 Topic: Recognizing and Reporting Inappropriate Online Behavior
 Lesson Title: How should you handle inappropriate online talk?
Introductory Question(s) and/or Background Information: 
 
This lesson is about 45 minutes and has three teaching components including the video section.
  • INVITE students to raise their hand if they have ever heard the saying, “Don’t talk to strangers.”
  • ASK: How might this “rule” change when we communicate online?
  • DEFINE: Vocabulary term "opportunity", "inappropriate", "risky", "harass"

Discussion Ideas:

  • Connecting with people online may not always be safe.
  • Students can get themselves into inappropriate situations. 
  • It is important to know how to identify an inappropriate situation and how to deal with it.
     
 
Follow-Up Questions:
  • Ask the student to self-reflect in a journal or a blog.
  • What are some of the opportunities and pitfalls of connecting with people online?
  • Have you ever experienced a situation where you had a “gut feeling” telling you that you may be at risk?
  • What are some rules for staying safe when talking and messaging online?

  • Students watch the video “Stacey’s Story – When Rumors Escalate,” a documentary-style story in which a girl reflects on what it was like to be the target of cyberbullying.
  • Students then discuss the video and related case studies in the Cyberbullying: Crossing the Line Discussion Guide.
