Board Of Trustees Meeting Highlights - September 11, 2018
We continue our efforts to communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with our families and staffs. We know not every parent, teacher, or staff member can attend our Board meetings, so we will provide a brief update after each Board meeting, sharing highlights and actions taken by the Board. As always, please let us know how to better serve and communicate with you! We want to be partners with you in the educational journey of the children entrusted to us.
- New employees to the RUSD family were invited to attend the Board meeting and were introduced and welcomed by the Superintendent and Board!
- Each June the El Dorado Hills Rotary Club honors a teacher from Buckeye Union School District, one teacher from the El Dorado Hills portion of the Rescue Union School District and one teacher from the El Dorado Union High School District. Superintendent Olson presented the Rotary Teacher of the Year award for Rescue to Erin Shoemake, Lake Forest Kindergarten teacher. Erin is the consummate educator; one with tremendous curricular knowledge, passion for students, families and ensuring every child entrusted to her learns, grows, and achieves at the highest level possible. She is highly respected and admired as an exceptional teacher, colleague, and person!

Superintendent Report
Superintendent Olson reported on the District’s two very powerful professional development days. The primary focus was on social emotional learning. Several early release Wednesdays have already had the focus on state testing data analysis, more social emotional learning strategies, and teacher led collaboration topics.
She also reported on our enrollment currently at 3,619 up from this time last year. We had projected being down 185 students but are only down 53 students from June of last year.
Mrs. Olson shared a few parent responses to the September newsletter that included the one-page article that originally came from Principal, Levi Cambridge and then Principal Michele Miller had her counselor, Jennifer Craig, create the student/family friendly version for our teachers and families to use. It focuses on the differences between being mean, rude and bullying. We have received a number of thank you’s and the article fits right in with our focus on social emotional learning, growth mindset, how our brains work and how to get along with others in a positive way.
Superintendent Olson went on to say the reason we, as well as parents, are noticing a difference is that our teachers and staffs always go above and beyond. We have greatly appreciated going into classrooms across the grade levels and district witnessing firsthand how teachers and staffs are creatively delving into growth mindset, social emotional learning by using picture books, chapter books, lots of questions that are open ended or specifically teaching their students about how their brains actually work. We even have yard duty supervisors at line up lead students in cross lateral exercises and brain breaks to reset themselves for the learning zone! She commented that the Board can be proud of the quality work the teachers, staffs and administration do each and every day to meet the diverse needs of our students!

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, Dave Scroggins, shared that evaluations from the two professional development days were very, positive with day one at 3.9 out of 4.0 for both Superintendent Olson’s Seashell address and Kelli Rizzi’s presentation on Trauma Informed Practice. Day two was also positive with a 3.4 out of 4.0 for Superintendent Olson and retired Superintendent, Steve Wehr.

Mr. Scroggins reported we are currently using the newly adopted history program, TCI at the Middle School and we are piloting Pearson history materials at the elementary level. He thanked Rhonda Picard and all the library media coordinators for their work in getting the materials in the hands of teachers.
He also reported that we are still awaiting CAASPP results but sites are using the preliminary data to analyze programs and develop systems of support to build upon some very strong scores. We are very, very, proud of the preliminary test results!
