Board of Trustees Meeting Highlights - December 12, 2017

We continue our efforts to communicate effectively and in a timely fashion with our families
and staffs. We know not every parent, teacher, or staff member can attend our Board
meetings, so we will provide a brief update after each Board meeting, sharing highlights and
actions taken by the Board. As always, please let us know how to better serve and
communicate with you! We want to be partners with you in the educational journey of the
children entrusted to us.

DISTRICT RECOGNITIONS:

Lake Forest Elementary School provided a presentation highlighting the engagement and
encouragement of all students. With a focus on math, they have restructured the school day
to allow for daily leveled math groups in 4th and 5th grades and established more intervention
groups for identified students in upper grades both during and outside school hours. The
Leaning Center and prep schedules were changed to allow for additional help in math in
both general and special ed. Staff articulations have centered on math instruction and ways
to improve monitoring of math progress.

A new program piloted this year for Lake Forest is the CHP Boot Camp teaching fitness, focus and self-discipline. Monthly sessions are led by officers and assisted by 4th grade staff and parents.

There was also a presentation by one of the Leadership students regarding the different activities, events and performances supported by Leadership including, Kidz Can, Fall Festival, Breakfast with Santa, Santa Run, Dolphin Dash, Dance Extravaganza ,Pioneer Day and Reading Awards for words read from 250,000 to 2,000,000! Lake Forest Leadership Team is comprised of about 20 responsible, independent and hardworking students from 4 th and 5th grade who act as role models in the classroom, at recess and at after school activities.
Difference Makers: As the presenting school for December, Lake Forest presented the Difference Maker award to school secretary, Sue Belli.

UPDATES:

The Board received an overview from Phil Jones Maintenance and Operations
Coordinator on the facility projects underway in the District as well as a pictorial
presentation of the progress on the Marina Village two-story project.
Transportation Director, Patrick Cahill reported we had 7 busses transporting at the California International Marathon in Sacramento. Over 200 busses were involved and it was a great opportunity for our drivers to be part of the community event. He also reported that we have received the loaner electric bus from Twin Rivers and 4 of our drivers have been able to try it out. Within the next week our bus should be delivered and by the end of January we should be able to schedule a route. We are still working with San Joaquin on the additional 2 busses.
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction provided information regarding the District’s results on the California School Dashboard state indicators for Academics and Chronic Absenteeism. Rescue Union School district is doing very well. In both ELA and Math, as a district, we are in the green category, which means we are meeting the standards. The subgroups that we need to focus our attention on are our English Language Learners and our Socioeconomically Disadvantaged students.
In the area of Chronic Absenteeism, we are proud to share that our district has the lowest percentage of chronic absenteeism in the entire county! We are at 4% and the county is over 11 %. A student is considered chronically absent if he/she has been absent 18 or more days in a school year. We know it is very important for students to be at school every day, not only for financial reasons, but for their quality of education.
Dave also provided a report on the results of the California Healthy Kids Survey in grades 5 and 7. Overall, the survey indicates our students are happy and connected to their schools. After analyzing the data, the areas we will focus on is meaningful participation for students across the grade levels, and feeling connected to school in the middle school grades.

The Board approved the Board Meeting Calendar for 2018:
Meetings will be on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. January 9th is scheduled as a
Study Session and January 23 will be a Regular Board meeting. June Regular meetings are
scheduled for the 12th and 19th.
The Board approved the proposal for Community Relations.
The Board approved AB 119 New Employee Orientation MOU with CSEA.
The Board approved the Specific Waiver Request – Resource Specialist Caseload to exceed the maximum of 28 students.
The Board approved the job description and salary schedule for Yard Supervisor.
The Board approved the school plans for Lakeview, Rescue and Marina Village.
The Board approved the First Interim Budget Report – Positive Certification.
The Board approved the Auditor’s Report Financial Statements for 2016-2017.
The Board approved the Appointing of Members of the Surplus Property 7-11 Committee
The Board approved Change Orders #1-4 for the Marina Village Two-Story Project
